【會務介紹與重要成果】
1.協助醫院設立安寧病房。
2.開辦「安寧志工學苑」，為國內首度系統化培訓臨終關懷/安寧療護
  志工之計畫。
3.推廣「生死教育」與「安寧療護」：
‧於2006年榮獲行政院衛生署國民健康局舉辦之「第一屆優良癌症防治
  民間團體選拔」優選獎。
‧出版《生命雙月刊》及生死教育叢書、教材。除了「最後的禮物」
  生命教育紀錄片(12集)，獲優質電視節目五顆星最高榮譽外，更在
  2006年3月出版「最後的月光-生命教育多媒體光碟」免費供大眾索取
  ，迴響熱烈，且榮獲國民健康局「2006年優良衛生教育教材-佳作」。
‧與各界賢達於民國89年成功推動「安寧緩和醫療條例」立法，並拋磚
  引玉，推動各界名人簽署「安寧緩和醫療意願書」。
‧製作「選擇不急救」善終觀念廣告片，獲金鐘獎非商業廣告獎殊榮。
‧舉辦講座研習、研討會、徵文/圖等活動，影響數萬名關心「生死議題
   」的民眾。
‧成立「生死教育委員會」，邀請各界專家協力深耕生死教育。
‧2005年舉辦「最後的月光-醫學人文公益舞台劇巡迴演出」為台灣首創
  之安寧療護舞台劇，共演出八場，場場爆滿，八成觀眾感動落淚，觀賞
  人次近3,200人！本齣讓人笑著流淚，充滿愛與感動的故事，以精緻的
  品質及生動的劇情，獲得眾人對惜生善終的共鳴。
4.建立本土化的靈性照顧模式：
‧兩年舉辦一次「佛法與臨終關懷研討會」，具領導指標地位。
‧進行「佛法與臨終關懷研究計畫」，開本土研究之先河。
‧每年定期辦理「本土化靈性關懷」入門、進階課程，
  培訓臨床佛教宗教師。
5.善終服務：
‧製作「回家，真好！」安寧居家療護手冊，為醫療人員及家屬的重要
  參考，且榮獲國民健康局「2006年優良衛生教育教材-優等獎」。
‧成立「安寧居家療護輔具租借中心」，免費出借氣墊床、氧氣製造機、
  噴霧器及抽痰機等，完成病人回家的心願。
‧成立「蓮花臨終關懷諮詢專線」(02)2599-1133，由經嚴格培訓且具臨
  床實務經驗之臨床佛教宗教師擔任線上諮詢服務，提供無遠弗屆的
  靈性照撫、善終引導。

About the Buddhist Lotus Hospice Care Foundation Taiwan

        The Buddhist scriptures says "Buddha came to this world for the living and death of human beings".

        In 20th Century human beings have benefited from well-developed medical technology. Yet even with this medical development, there are still so many helpless dying people that can not be cured. In this modern society, the most hurtful thing in deep the place of our heart is to watch our beloved family members suffering helplessly and dying in front of us, yet we can not help at all.

        Right now, there are some hospitals in Taiwan, which offer special service of hospice care. However, it could only reduce their physical pain. As for comforting and leading the spirit of the patient and the family member, there is insufficient humanitarian caring. Hence a group of buddhists working in hospitals gathered together to set up a "Buddhist Medical Union" in 1990. They went on to establish the "Buddhist Lotus Hospice Care Foundation" in1994. The Foundation plans to build "Buddhist Lotus Hospital(s)"; which will offer the patients, the family members and the society the followings:
 
1.To build up religious spirit: 
We will help those dying people to have correct concept about death, and how to face it bravely, solemnly, and peacefully.
2. To brighten filial compassion: 
For the old that urgently need be cared. especially those who face the death, it can offer the resources and places to take care of them, setting up models for filial compassion of the Taiwanese tradition.
3. To reduce bereavement for the family members of the patients: 
Through the whole course of anticipating and assisting the procedure, we will comfort the fear and mourning of the family members.
4. To build-up buddhist hospice care model: 
In order to develop humanitarian respect for the hospice patients, we will take the responsibility to educate the society. 
   
        Buddhist Lotus Hospice Care Foundation can help the patients to follow the Buddhist ceremonial procedures on the way to the sacred paradise. Volunteers, friends and relatives will pray for eight hours at the death of the patient in order to help the patient to reach the sacred land successfully with Amitabuddha's blessing. Afterwards, within forty nine days after the death, continuous praying In Buddhist sanctuary will benefit the dead people and raise the soul from suffering in the next world. It will also help comfort the bereavement of the family members.

        In this fast growing world, hospice care hospitals have been built widely in the world. Today in Taiwan, we really need hospitals that will take good care of the terminal patients. We are desperate for your help and assistance. Please give us your mercy hands. Let's get together to dedicate a perfect ending for those helpless hospice atients and their families.

        The Buddhist Lotus Hospice Care Foundation (the Lotus Foundation ) was founded in July 1994. It was established by a group of Buddhist medical professionals and Buddhists working in hospitals, pharmacies and related professions. The Board consists of 15 members including physicians, nurses, pharmacists ,monk and social worker.

        The Lotus Foundation had four major goals: (1)To provide Buddhist spiritual care; (2)To promote filial doctrine; (3)To relieve the patient's suffering and the family's bereavement; (4)To establish a model of Buddhist terminal care in Taiwan.

        In Taiwan, the hospice movement started in 1990 in a Christian hospital, the Mackay Memorial Hospital in Taipei by establishment of an 18-bed hospice ward by a group of oncologists. Hospice home care was provided by a few hospitals. In 1994, a second hospice ward with 20 beds was open in a Catholic hospital, the Cardinal Tien's Memorial Hospital in Taipei. The third hospice of 17 beds was established in the National Taiwan University Hospital in Taipei in June 1995, the first one in a university hospital and also a government owned hospital. The first hospice in a Buddhist hospital was open in August 1996 in the Buddhist Tzu-Chi Hospital in Hualien, eastern Taiwan. Now, there are 15 hospital based hospices in Taiwan with about 200 beds in total.

        In the civilian side, there are three private foundations engaged in the promotion of hospice movement, namely a Christian Chinese Hospice Care Foundation, a Catholic Sanipax Socio-Medical Service & Education Foundation and the Buddhist Lotus Hospice Care Foundation. A Taiwan Hospice Organization was also found in October 1995 to coordinate all the related foundations, hospitals and interested individuals. The Taiwan Academy of Hospice and Palliative Medicine wan established in May 1999 by physcians working in this field.
